Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a type of therapy specifically targeting how we learn and behave. The science behind ABA helps us understand how and why we react to certain situations and then harness learning capabilities to increase positive behaviors and decrease negative behaviors.
ABA therapy can help:
Improve communication skills and language use
Improve focus, social skills, memory, and learning
Decrease negative and harmful behaviors
The driving force behind ABA therapy is positive reinforcement. When patients act or react in a desired manner, they are rewarded. When a behavior is followed by a reward, we are more likely to repeat the behavior because our brain looks forward to that positive reinforcement. As behavior and rewards are repeated over time, negative behaviors will be replaced with positive behaviors.
The A-B-Cs of ABA therapy
Behavior can be broken down into three parts:
The Antecedent is what triggers a behavior.
The Behavior is the response (or lack thereof) to the Antecedent.
The Consequence occurs as a result of the behavior (i.e., positive reinforcement).
These three aspects help us understand why a person might exhibit a particular behavior and how consequences can affect the behavior.
ABA therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Each patient is carefully assessed before a personalized plan is developed. As patients make their way through an ABA therapy program, the plan will be adapted based on the results.
