How to Help Your Autistic Child Relax After School

Creating an environment after school is crucial to help your autistic child relax and smoothly transition, from school, to home. Here are some practical tips to make this change easier and encourage your childs sense of calm.

🌟 1. Let Them Take Control

On a school day children are usually given instructions. To make sure your kid feels comfortable when they get home let them have some freedom, in choosing their after school activities. You can prepare a box with labeled sticks each representing a fun activity. Allow them to pick a stick and decide what they want to do. This small chance to make decisions can really help boost their confidence and help them unwind after a day.

🍎 2. Have a Snack Ready

When your kids return from school, make sure to have a snack ready for them. Whether it's a sandwich, some fruit, crackers, or chicken nuggets, a nibble can help balance their mood and keep their energy up. This small act of kindness sets a vibe for the rest of the day and eases the transition from school to home.

🌈 3. Give Them Space and Time

When you get home, let your child do things they like, such as coloring, watching TV, or playing outside. This free time is important for them to unwind and destress after a day. After they've had some time to themselves, they usually become more open to hanging out with you or joining in on scheduled activities.

🤫 4. Don't Push for Conversation

It's normal to be curious about how their day was. It's best not to pry if they just say, "Fine." Kids, like grown-ups, might need some time to decompress. Let them have their space to chill out, and they'll probably open up about their day when they're ready. Treasuring these chats can mean a lot.

Remember

Each child has their individuality. They may need varying amounts of time and personal space to unwind post-school. As caregivers, it's crucial to recognize and adjust to their requirements and discover methods to connect and assist them.

By integrating these approaches into your school schedule, you can aid your child in unwinding, re-energizing, and regaining a sense of balance following a hectic day at school.
