Play is a part of a child's development, contributing to the growth of their gross motor skills, social interactions, communication abilities, language acquisition, critical thinking, and problem-solving capabilities. However, children on the autism spectrum might display play skills. They may prefer playing or engaging in activities like repeatedly organizing toys or playing with the same object. By providing guidance and structuring, we can help children learn play skills.
There are fun items you can use to engage a child in play;
Balloons: It's important to supervise children while they are playing with balloons. They can be bounced around or inflated and deflated for activities.
Bubbles-Different types of bubbles are available, along with different wands and bubble machines. Blowing bubbles is an activity for children, as they can ask for bubbles through gestures or expressions. My daughter used to sign "more" when she couldn't speak to keep the bubble blowing going.
Cause and Effect Toys: Toys like Jack in the Box teach children that their actions have consequences and give them a sense of control during playtime.
Blocks: Playing with blocks encourages turn-taking. You can build a tower together by each person adding a block until it eventually falls.
Parents can engage their children in a fun activity where they build towers and let the child knock them down. This kind of playtime is beneficial for developing children's motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Simple puzzles-To enhance problem-solving skills and encourage turn-taking, parents can provide puzzles with knobs on top.
Books: Engaging books that incorporate features like sounds, pop-ups, textures, or interactive activities such as tabs and wheels are highly captivating for children.
